By Rich Scinto, Record-Journal MERIDEN — More than 200 people turned out Saturday for the Meriden YMCA’s 13th annual Healthy Kids Day event for family fun and exercise. There was no shortage of activities for children and their parents to join. Outside, children made their way around a traffic cone racetrack on tricycles and played on an inflatable slide. The center was even busier inside, as many studios were used for combined parent-and-child classes such as Zumba, yoga and karate. “It’s the YMCA’s initiative to bring the community together to promote health activities and healthy eating,” said Carrie Marquardt, the Meriden YMCA’s health and wellness director.
Congratulations to Dave Dufour and his teammates from S.A.L.S.A. INC. on winning the Competitive Division. It was an exciting hard fought game with S.A.L.S.A. INC. pulling off the win in the final seconds of overtime. Angel Rosado and his Str8Cash team earned second place. Congratulations to Frank Zeledon and his Sinai Bakery teammates on winning the Recreation Division. Brian Amenta and the Amenta’s Barbershop Team earned second place. The Meriden YMCA's Youth Theater program performs Beauty and the Beast this weekend April 27th and 28th at 7:30 p.m. and April 29th at 2 p.m. at Thomas Edison Middle School.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Meriden YMCA Youth Basketball program players had a special treat, a trip to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
Editorial Meriden's YMCA, under the direction of John Benigni, has expanded its presence in preschool and child care: 600 children are now attending one or another licensed daycare programs run by this organization. Most recently, the Y has purchased Lil' Rascals Preschool and Daycare on Swain Avenue, a Meriden facility for 30 years. It also operates Head Start on Liberty Street, the Martin A. Gaffey Childcare Center on Crown Street, the Toddlers and Infant Care Center on Main Street, South Meriden, as well as child care in city schools and child services in the Y's main building on West Main.
