Mountain Mist Outdoor Center in Meriden offers diabetes day camp

It’s been a world of changes for Aniyah Slater, 11, who learned in October she has diabetes. There is the new concern over her blood sugar levels and her diet, while she’s playing, making arts and crafts and new friends at summer camp.

”It’s nice and fun here,” Aniyah said. “I wish it was a little bit longer.”

Aniyah is one of 29 children attending a pilot diabetes day camp at the YMCA’s Mountain Mist Outdoor Center. The camp is run in conjunction with the Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, the Y, and funded through the Lion’s Club.

Dr. Cem Demirci, the medical director of the Children’s Medical Center diabetes program, and five medical staff members volunteered their vacation time and are spending the week at the outdoor center.

The Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA Donates Swim Lessons to Kiwanis StoryWalk® Program to Teach Water Safety

The Kiwanis Club of Meriden is presenting StoryWalk® at Hubbard Park, featuring Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim by Kim and Stew Leonard, Jr., with De. Lawrence E. Shapiro. StoryWalk® is an innovative way for families to enjoy reading and the outdoors by featuring enlarged pages of a children’s story along an outdoor path. This year’s story is featured in partnership with the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation and will be part of the Meriden Daffodil Festival this weekend. The Y is the nation’s leading teacher of water safety and swimming skills. The Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA donated gift certificates for swim lessons to the Kiwanis Club of Meriden to use in a drawing for families who participate in the StoryWalk®.
