Fair and fest pull together for family fun

The YMCA/NAACP Family Fun Day at Mountain Mist Camp Saturday put two efforts into one.

With two organizations in conflict on the same June date, organizers of the Meriden YMCA Family Fun Fest and the Meriden-Wallingford NAACP’s Get Out & Play Health Fair decided to combine the two established events, and everybody doubled their fun as an estimated 1,500 flocked to Mountain Mist on a summery, 85-degree afternoon. By the end of the event, the turnout exceeded everyone´s expectations. Steve Markoja, operations director for the YMCA, who has been associated with the Y’s Family Fun Fest for the last seven years, said 1,500 attendees passed by the gatehouse at the entrance to Mountain Mist. “Really it´s grown and taken on a life of its own,” Markoja said. “What’s better than seeing these kids’ smiling faces?”

Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebration held at the Meriden YMCA

Families celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday month with a another free fun family event at the Meriden YMCA.

The Cat in the Hat read stories, we went fishing for “One Fish, Two Fish,” created hats for “Cat in the Hat” and another art project for “Put Me In the Zoo”.

Instead of “Hopping on Pop” we hopped in our bouncy houses.

Everyone enjoyed healthy snacks and entered drawings for a chance to win free classes.

Fun and Games Camp-style

On February 19th the kids and camp staff came out to play at the Meriden YMCA gymnasium to get in the summer camp spirit with our favorite camp games. The gymnasium was filled with happy past and future campers playing Star Wars Dodgeball, Shipwrecked, Four Square, Basketball and more.

Olympic Swimmers teach swim clinic at Meriden YMCA

MERIDEN — Olympic swim medalists Kim Vandenberg and Jason Lezak made a splash at the YMCA Sunday, sharing training tips with 105 swimmers from the statewide Yankee Cluster Swim League.

The Olympians began with a dry-land presentation to swimmers and parents. The swimmers, ranging from seven to 10 years old, made waves of their own with a mass entry into the YMCA pool, with parents lining the pool deck.

Meriden Y helps keep kids busy during break

Children have not been left idle this week with school out of session.

The Meriden YMCA rolled out two new bounce houses to entertain children in the vacation week program. The new houses were in full use Tuesday and will be open again on New Year’s Day for Y members and non-members from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Meriden YMCA is looking for Red Cross certified lifeguards for part time positions at our indoor pool.

Downtown Holiday Extravaganza Draws Hundreds

Families poured downtown to partake in hayrides, face painting, and Santa-sighting during the 4th annual Downtown Holiday Extravaganza hosted by the YMCA on Saturday.
