On a beautiful autumn day, 50 of the Meriden YMCA’s older adult members and their friends enjoyed a hike, delicious barbeque, a presentation on the Letter Carrier Alert program, games and prizes at the Meriden YMCA Mountain Mist Outdoor Center.

The Meriden YMCA announced the winners of our Mountain Mist Day Camp Counselor of the Year Award and Counselor in Training Award.
The Meriden YMCA is the place where families come together to get healthy and put play in their day. On Saturday, Sept. 8, families gathered at the Meriden YMCA for some free family fun and kicked off the fall session at the Y.
Christopher Bischoff may be slight in stature, but both his easy smile and his enthusiasm are giant-sized. A top student in Maloney’s junior class, Bischoff maintains excellent grades while working, participating year-round in sports, and playing a central role in the Connecticut YMCA Youth and Government Program.
By Russell Blair, Record-Journal MERIDEN — With miniature rackets and miniature nets, 13 children from 5 to 10 years old were introduced the sport and art of tennis Thursday morning at Washington Park. The Meriden YMCA received a grant from the United States Tennis Association to host a 10-and-under tennis camp this week. Maureen DiPace, a Platt High School math teacher and former Platt tennis coach, said the new program is a way to introduce the sport to younger children.
Kimberly Primicerio | Record-Journal MERIDEN — Local teens and tweens are taking responsibility and thinking about ways to make money over the summer, and in a poor job market, the skills they learn could help them in the future as well as now. Though they may be too young now to apply for a job at McDonald’s or a grocery store, they are capable of being baby sitters. Eleven young people enrolled recently in an American Red Cross Baby-sitting Class at the Meriden YMCA. For several hours, the class of males and females learned the ins and outs of being a good sitter. YMCA fitness director Carrie Marquardt led the class.

By Andrew Ragali, Record-Journal staff | MERIDEN — Awards aren’t usually part of the program for the Meriden YMCA’s annual dinner, but they were Thursday night at this year’s program at the Mountain Mist Outdoor Center. Three awards were included in this year’s program, called “A Midsummer’s Night by the Pool,” because “we wanted to find a way to better honor our volunteers,” said Joan Goodman, membership and marketing director.
By Cat Hill, Record-Journal staff | 0 comments MERIDEN — More than 40 sponsors donated goods, services or money to help with the fourth annual YMCA Martini and Massage event at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center on Thursday. The event is the largest fundraiser the YMCA hosts. Drinks were flowing, plates of hors d’oeuvres were being circulated by volunteers and more than 100 silent-auction items were frantically being bid upon.

Longtime YMCA member and avid traveler John B. “Jack” DiPersio died in his home on May 29 at the age of 86. He was probably best known as a fixture at the Meriden YMCA for more than 70 years, having joined when he was 10 years old.
