They're raising a little racket at Meriden YMCA Tennis Camp

By Russell Blair, Record-Journal MERIDEN — With miniature rackets and miniature nets, 13 children from 5 to 10 years old were introduced the sport and art of tennis Thursday morning at Washington Park. The Meriden YMCA received a grant from the United States Tennis Association to host a 10-and-under tennis camp this week. Maureen DiPace, a Platt High School math teacher and former Platt tennis coach, said the new program is a way to introduce the sport to younger children.

Kids learn about baby-sitting at Meriden YMCA

Kimberly Primicerio | Record-Journal MERIDEN — Local teens and tweens are taking responsibility and thinking about ways to make money over the summer, and in a poor job market, the skills they learn could help them in the future as well as now. Though they may be too young now to apply for a job at McDonald’s or a grocery store, they are capable of being baby sitters. Eleven young people enrolled recently in an American Red Cross Baby-sitting Class at the Meriden YMCA. For several hours, the class of males and females learned the ins and outs of being a good sitter. YMCA fitness director Carrie Marquardt led the class.

Awards highlight Meriden YMCA's annual meeting

Three awards were included in this year’s program, called “A Midsummer’s Night by the Pool,” because “we wanted to find a way to better honor our volunteers,” said Joan Goodman, membership and marketing director.

Healthy Kids Day brings out the kids -- and their parents

By Rich Scinto, Record-Journal MERIDEN — More than 200 people turned out Saturday for the Meriden YMCA’s 13th annual Healthy Kids Day event for family fun and exercise. There was no shortage of activities for children and their parents to join. Outside, children made their way around a traffic cone racetrack on tricycles and played on an inflatable slide. The center was even busier inside, as many studios were used for combined parent-and-child classes such as Zumba, yoga and karate. “It’s the YMCA’s initiative to bring the community together to promote health activities and healthy eating,” said Carrie Marquardt, the Meriden YMCA’s health and wellness director.
