Meriden YMCA upgrades to lower energy bill

The Meriden YMCA said it will save nearly $689,000 in energy costs over the next 20 years, thanks to a recently installed cogeneration system, efficient lighting and occupancy controls.
The Connecticut Green Bank's Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) provided a $372,466 low-interest loan for the project, which the Y said will help keep the water in its showers hot during peak usage times and allow for more funding for providing kids camp scholarships and memberships to low-income families.
Southington's Emendee Technologies was the energy consultant for the project.

Meriden Holiday Festival Drives Crowd

MERIDEN — It really is the most wonderful time of the year for 6-year-old Xavier Taylor of Wallingford. Not only is Xavier on Santa Claus’ nice list, but his birthday is Dec. 24.

“I get two days of presents,” he said.

On Saturday, he got to tell Old St. Nick exactly what he wants for Christmas — a basketball leads his list — at the YMCA’s annual Breakfast with Santa.

About 500 people attended the breakfast, which was part of Saturday’s Downtown Meriden Holiday Extravaganza presented by the Downtown Neighborhood Association.

“Our goal is to get families together and to bring people downtown,” said Steve Markoja, operations director for the Meriden YMCA. “It’s been great. We’ve got a good crowd.”

Xavier stopped by the event with his grandmother, Marge Taylor; his mother, Stacey Taylor; and his 2-year-old twin brothers, Quincy and Trayvon.
