Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA Supports Kids Safely at Summer Camp

Summertime marks the highlight of every child’s year. It’s a time to play outside, spend time with friends, and for many, head to summer camp for adventure and activities. The Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA is eager and ready to help your child safely take a break from screen time, indoor activities and distance learning to experience the benefits of summer camp: outdoor fun and exercise, making friends, and social-emotional learning with peers.

Camper safety is our top priority and the Y is clean, safe, and in full compliance with all CDC, DECD, public health, and Connecticut Office of Early Childhood guidelines regarding cleaning, sanitizing, and social distancing. “Across the state, YMCAs safely served more than 13,200 campers in 2020 with only one case of Covid-19 at two camps, neither of which originated at the Y. Our Mountain Mist Day Camp in Meriden and Camp Thundermoon in Berlin had zero cases,” says John Benigni, CEO of the Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA. “Our camp staff are specially trained on how to lead traditional camp activities so campers have fun and experience the joy of summer camp while following all guidelines.”

At Mountain Mist Day Camp in Meriden, campers participate in a variety of activities including arts and crafts, woods games, hiking, swimming, sports, archery, and climbing tower. Specialty camps are offered for campers in grades 3 – 8 and include Sports, Skateboarding, Gymnastics, Fishing, Fort Building, Horseback Riding, Musical Theater, Dance, Art, Cooking, and STEM.

At Camp Thundermoon in Berlin, campers enjoy fun activities following weekly themes. Some of the favorite outdoor activities include kickball, water balloon toss, and gaga ball. There are Specialty Camps offered for every interest including STEM, Sports, Glam Camp, Leaders Club, and Art Camp.

More than ever, kids need the outlet for physical activity, fresh air, and social interaction that summer camp provides. Camps are perhaps the safest and best place, both from an emotional and physical health perspective, for young people to be.
