Upgrades at the Meriden YMCA

Meriden, CT (December 10, 2015) – An unveiling ceremony for cutting edge, new technology at the Meriden YMCA was held on Thursday, December 10, 2015, at 110 West Main Street in Meriden.  Mayor Kevin Scarpati, Representative Betty Boukus, Representative Cathy Abercrombie, Bryan Garcia, President and CEO of the Connecticut Green Bank, John Benigni, CEO of the Meriden YMCA, and Dave Pestillo, owner of Emendee Technologies were in attendance.

The new technology at the Meriden YMCA consist of a cogeneration system, energy efficient lighting and occupancy controls.  Connecticut Green Bank’s C-PACE program (Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy) financed $372,466 for the upgrades.  These upgrades are expected to save over $34,000 annually in energy costs and $688,991 over the financing term.  The Meriden YMCA will use the savings generated to provide additional funding for scholarships for their kids camp and memberships for those families in need.

C-PACE is an innovative program that is helping commercial, industrial multi-family and nonprofit property owners access affordable, long-term financing for meaningful energy upgrades to their buildings. By enabling building owners to finance qualifying energy efficiency and clean energy improvements through a voluntary assessment on their property tax bill, more comprehensive energy improvements that would otherwise be difficult to afford are made possible.

Emendee Technologies, LLC of Southington, was the energy consultant for the project, which involved coordination with the utilities, vendors, and sub-contractors.

Because of their leadership, the Meriden YMCA was identified by the Connecticut Green Bank as one of its “PACEsetters” – a distinction earned by businesses and nonprofits throughout Connecticut who are changing the way that their peers are thinking about energy by leading the way in making smart energy investments through C-PACE.

“The new efficiency measures at the Meriden YMCA are an innovative way for the organization to cut down on their energy costs,” said Bryan Garcia, President & CEO of Connecticut Green Bank. “Connecticut Green Bank was excited to partner with the Meriden YMCA to finance this endeavor and to have them as one of our PACEsetters.  This project and other projects supporting energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources benefit Connecticut and the region, and set an example for other businesses and institutions.”

The Connecticut Green Bank leverages public and private funds to assist homeowners, companies, municipalities, and institutions to support renewable energy and energy efficiency throughout the state.

“Installing a cogeneration system, energy efficient lighting and occupancy controls helps the Meriden YMCA achieve three goals,” said John Benigni, CEO of the Meriden YMCA.  “Our first goal is to provide our members with consistent excellent service. One benefit of the co-gen system is to ensure delivery of hot water for showers including during peak usage times. Second, saving on energy costs allows us to put more dollars towards our mission of strengthening our community with programs and services to help kids and families thrive. Third, any measures we take to “go green” preserves resources for future generations.”
